Many of you would ask me about the meanings and messages behind my paintings, my honest answer would be I’m really not sure. This may sound less professional compared to those artists that can explain every single dot in their work, lucky them, but I’m still trying to understand my art myself. I can surely point out the inspirational sources or hidden messages but the core meaning is still blurring.
In most of them I have chosen a theme and created the works based on that. Other elements not necessarily connected to the theme would appear which I could associate them with my rebel nature.
Maybe I could also compare it to different channels from a satellite being emerged.
My technique of drawing is very fluid. I usually draw random lines then start finding images according to those lines. This means I never have the complete control over the artwork, sometimes it seems that it creates itself as if the image has chosen to exist and have used me as the creator. There clearly is another consciousness involved, weather my own deep hidden subconscious or something else.
In my recent works I have stopped using the random lines technique and instead started drawing in a very automatic way, without thinking much. The result is similar to my previous works yet they have much more mystery and freedom. I could suggest that I have reached somewhere in my journey of self discovery and perhaps unveiled a few things as the appearance of masks in my works has been weakened.
Iranian and Islamic influences are always present, which are sometimes snapshots from my childhood, also combined with my present environment in London.
Normally viewers can have interesting interpretations and find hidden stories and symbolism unknown to myself, the images all have a story, and it has always amazed me to hear them

Maryam Hashemi led a workshop exploring the themes in her work, delving into the subconscious, participants were invited to scribble find forms in the seemingly formless and create a collective artwork.

"Today, I have experienced open creative drawing without a theme or outside influence, allowed myself to be drawn into other peoples' perspective – fantastic! Thankyou for provding such a great workshop".

Fun way of drawing, learn to look, see and find images. Interesting approach to drawing"

"It was fantastic to see the difference between our beginning point and the looseness at the end – I'd like to play more at home now! I loved letting go of my own piece and passing it on – very freeing"
