Exploring thought process, emotion and journeys of decision making that affect ourselves and our world

At the most basic level I’m concerned with recycling and sustainability – reusing textiles that would otherwise have little use. It is estimated that more than 1 million tonnes of textiles are thrown away every year, with most of this coming from household sources. Most of the materials I have used in these pieces have been discarded by me and my family; too old, worn or grotty for a charity shop.

But this leads into very personal decision making. How guilty do I feel when I buy something? Most of us have too many clothes, too many things we don’t need. Even so, we all desire shiny new things. Advertisers prey on our insecurites to sell us a more ‘attractive lifestyle’. At the same time however, I do want things to last, I want to hoard its story and keep hold of associated emotions. I want to grasp the old, the worn, the unappreciated. But even when it is possible to take away something and to recycle and renew, it does not resolve my feelings. Then life goes on and decision making gets no easier – I feel I go round and round, up and down, two steps forwards and one step back.

And here is one from the workshop:
