Let It Be Heard News team

Niamh and Ava, aged 15

The Let It Be Heard team are a newspaper group who believe in expressing the view of young people.

  • We believe strongly that, as young people we are the future generation, our views are very important and should be represented in the media.
  • It started in a workshops in the summer of 2009, and included people from all over the world - who were attending an English summer school, and local youths from Reading. It started in RISC, and now all meetings are held there.
  • Whether you are a good writer, photographer, designer, illustrator or simply feel like coming along for the experience, please sign up. We need more youths to join to keep the newspaper group running, please sign up!
  • We plan to expand the newspaper, and start doing interviews on activities around the community. We encourage everybody to get invovled.

The Birth of Let It Be Heard, Summer '09

max 0002 0041

This was us doing research for the first edition of our newspaper. We took pages from The Sun, The Reading Chronicle and The Times - to compare different styles of writing newspaper articles. We also looked at how young people are represented in the media and discussed what kind of news we would like to see in the paper.

Seeing that was alot of negative articles about teens, I (Niamh) wrote an article named: 'Unfairly Stereotyped: The Youths of Today'. After doing the research, we started on the newspaper.

The Let It Be Heard paper was inspired by a street newspaper in La Paz, Hormigon Armado, written and distributed by homeless young people living in the city as a positive form of protest for social and economic change. The following resources can be used by young people, teachers and youth leaders who want to put together a paper on issues which are important to young people today.

It contains articles, interviews and images from the paper 'Hormigon Armado' on the lives of the young people with activities and links to other useful resources.
