Tuesday, 11th of May 2010
Reading International Solidarity Centre: Open Call an outdoor installation artist Artist wanted to build a permanent installation on RISC’s roof garden working with the local community and garden volunteers. RISC: RISC works with schools, community organisations and the public; raising the profile of international issues and promoting action for sustainable development, equality and social justice. www.risc.org.uk. About our Roof garden: Sustainable development and food security has always been one of the main themes of RISC's work. In 2002 we took this further by creating an edible forest garden on the flat roof above the conference hall. Designed as an educational tool using permaculture principles, the garden has become an oasis in the centre of Reading, a demonstration of how a garden can support more sustainable lifestyles and provide a practical solution to the problems of 'Peak oil' and global climate change. It has had international media coverage and was shortlisted for the Observer Ethical Garden Award, 2009. For more details and images of RISC’s roof garden please see www.risc.org.uk/gardens Details about the project: We are currently seeking an artist to work with us to build a permanent garden installation on the roof garden that reflects its principles and design. For example living lightly on the planet, encouraging diversity, the cycling of energy and working with nature. • Sustainable sourced materials which would weather with the garden as well as survive the winter months • Installation would be responsive to the garden and also the changes of season (i.e. in the winter it would be visually be more visible as well as exposed to the elements) • May be functional, for example a water feature or a piece that plants will grow round or attract a diversity of insects or birds. • Artist would work with the local community and RISC volunteers) to build the installation (this may be parts or all of the final piece) The project will take place over five days in August 2010 (dates to be negotiated). Artists fees include planning, preparation and making of the project. Artist fee of £1000@£200 per day £300 for materials, we would assist the artist in sourcing salvaged materials. How to apply: Please send us examples of previous work, a brief outline on how you would respond to the garden. We are interested in your processes, the materials you work with and ways you may have engaged communities in the making of the work and a CV. Deadline: Friday 11th June 2010 Project start date: August 2010

International Women’s Day
Created during a period in history of social instability and uncertainty International Women’s Day has developed into an event that is firmly rooted in a history of activism and protest. Since its creation in 1917 it has successfully challenged social injustice such as the vote for women, working conditions of all workers and the exemption of women from trade unions.
To this day the ethos of the event is to acknowledge the past accomplishments of womankind and to look forward to the untapped potential we have. International Women’s day seeks to consider this and celebrate without regard to divisions, whether ethnic, linguistic, economic or cultural.

Skills dating! Friday 19th February 2010
Welcoming in Fair Trade Fortnight at RISC
As part of Fairtrade Fortnight, RISC are holding a ‘skills dating’ evening. Heard of speed dating? Well, this is very similar, although you won’t be swapping numbers for romantic reasons, but in order to swap skills with a new friend! You might find yourself writing a poem in exchange for a delicious cake - or fixing a boiler in exchange for a French lesson. Sound good? Then start thinking of what skills you have to offer and come along for a fun-filled evening of new faces and entertainment, all part of Fairtrade Fortnight 2010.
