Reading ITE1 0001

An article about this work "Beyond Masks and Drums" was published in October 2009 in issue 33 of StArt magazine for primary art teachers. It describes how we have begun to combine stimulating and creative art activities with promoting

  • understanding of diversity: race and ethnicity, gender, disability and sexuality within Britain and globally
  • an awareness of the wider world: a balanced view of people and places around the world and an understanding of interdependence
  • an understanding of how they can make a difference: their rights and responsibilities as citizens and as consumers, the causes of poverty, conflict and injustice and a commitment to take action
  • the skills to think about futures: the impact of poverty and discrimination on aspirations and outcomes, and about sustainability locally and globally

GC training has now become a regular feature of the courses for secondary PGCE and GTP Art & Design students and their school mentors.

English
GC is now an established part of the course for the 1st and 2nd year BAEds. Ist years receive training from RISC and a follow up session with the course leader.

English Project

English Project 0001

2nd years receive two training sessions and 3 weeks guided planning with RISC and the course leader culminating in the delivery of the project with a class from a local school. Local school pupils visit the University to take part in a day of activity, planned by the English students. They design a literacy project based around key elements of Global Citizenship, such as peace and conflict, fair trade, human rights, diversity and identity.

English Project 3
Evaluation time enables students to plan how to use the materials in schools during their teaching experience.
A paper outlining this work has been published online by LSBU.
Future plans involve developing and guiding cross-curricular projects.

Music
Music Secondary PGCE students took part in an innovative project in 2010/2011, using their scheme of work writing module and Enterprise Pedagogy learning to create schemes of work delivering a wide range of music learning and Global Citizenship. They trialled these lessons with their mentors in schools, and then adapted and edited them for publication on the RISC Resource Bank website. This project was written as a paper for London South Bank University's ITE network journal.

Secondary PGCEs: a GC lecture & seminar is now an established feature of the Professional Studies course for all students. Tutors are working with RISC to build on this and develop GC work in the subject specialisms of Science, Art & Design, Music and English.

For those students who have 3-week Further Development Placements (FDPs) and who have successfully completed their standards early, RISC offers student placements and are especially keen to encourage students from Science & MFL specialisms.

Primary PGCEs: RISC delivers 3 GC sessions for all primary PGCE students: an introductory day followed up with feedback and discussion of cross-curricular project planning, a subject focused activity day, and a half day on strategies for evaluation.

RISC also provides GC training for Early Years specialists, and for all primary and secondary GTPs.

ICSET (Int’l Centre for Studies in Education & Training)
ICSET focuses on 3 themes, one of which is GC. RISC has been invited to be a partner and has agreed to offer seminars, internships and facilitate access to Global Schools for research and visitors.
