Permaculture
...applied environmental design,
with ethics ...
and those ethics are:

  • Earth care,
  • People Care,
  • Fare Share.

"Permaculture is a vision, taking us beyond sustainability"
The term was coined in the late 70's by Australian ecologists Bill Mollison and David Holmgren to describe an active kind of relationship with nature. If nature, in the wild as it were, is naturally sustainable surely if we copy those princples then we can construct sutainable systems ourselves which are dynamic, robust and endlessesly productive.

Nature as a teacher:

  • Biodiversity gives strength- nature hates monocultures
  • No waste - the output of one system is the input for the next, there is no waste in the forest- Everything, but everything cycles!
  • Multiple functions - Everything in a design functions in many ways
  • Work with nature rather than against
  • The problem is the solution
  • Make the least change for the greatest possible effect
  • The yield of a system is theoretically unlimited (or only limited by the imagination and information of the designer)
  • Everything gardens (or modifies its environment)
From Permaculture, a Designers' Manual, by Bill Mollison:

David Holgrem's 'essence of permaculture'

1. Observe & Interact
2.Catch & Store Energy
3. Obtain a Yield
4. Apply Self-regulation & Accept Feedback
5. Use & Value Renewable Resources and Services
6. Produce No Waste
7. Design From Patterns to Details
8. Integrate Rather Than Segregate
9. Use Small and Slow Solutions
10. Use and Value Diversity
11. Use Edges and Value the Marginal
12. Creatively Use and Respond to Change

The UK has a lively permaculture Association wich holds events and runs courses via a national network of practitioners, teachers and enthusiasts.

Permaculture in Australia
There are many good books on the subject and is certainly one of them, from Mr Homgren himself, the quiet one of the permaculture co-founders (the other being Bill Mollison.) With many excellent links to sites and projects around the world from David's site.
