Maize

Indigenous peoples from Yucatan Mexico believe that man was fashioned from Maize by the gods of creation. Everything in traditional Mexican society is centred around this abundant plant where they cultivate many 100's of varieties. It was introduced by the Portuguese colonialists to Southern Africa about 400 years ago, where it has become a staple crop for a great many subsistance famers.
