Picking pineapples

Many countries in the Majority World are dependant on cash crops to provide jobs and earn foreign exchange to repay debts or import goods and services. However, many producers do not get a fair price that will give workers a reasonable quality of life and there is often long term damage to the environment.

A simple introduction to global trade starting with everyday supermarket items. Includes images of farmers producing coffee, cocoa, bananas.

Papapaa Comic relief KS2-3 £8
DVD and photopack on how cocoa is harvested, traded, processed and retailed. Looks at the benefits of fair trade and how one school launched an awareness campaign. Can be adapted for KS4. Recommended.

Weblinks

Milking It is an interactive online KS4 resource about world trade, produced by Oxfam. Using the lives of two farmers from Wales and Jamaica, students learn about the impact of unfair world trade rules.

Papapaa website includes free resources about the cocoa supply chain and webcasts made by children of cocoa farmers.
