Organic - you know it makes sense!

field system

The term "organic" is a legal category, enforced by the government. As such, any food labelled organic must be grown or reared without the use of:

  • pesticides
  • artificial fertilisers
  • genetic modification
  • antibiotics

At present organic farming make up less than one per cent of the total UK farming, and 70% of organic foods sold in the UK must be imported. However, an increasing number of people are converting to organic foods, and the government estimate that by 2002, organic food will account for 7-8% of the total UK food market, with a retail value of over £1 billion.

Organic food is produced from safe, sustainable farming systems, producing healthy crops and livestock without collateral damage to the environment. By avoiding the use of artificial fertilisers and pesticides on the land, it seeks to develop a healthy, fertile soil through organic methods only, and breaks away from the sterile practice of monoculture farming. But, most of all, the food produced organically is of the highest nutritional quality, and tastes extremely good!

JOIN READING'S
TRUE FOOD COOP

The True Food Club is a non-profit making group of local people keen to obtain organic wholefoods at near wholesale prices. Meeting every four to six weeks, members select and order from a club catalogue which lists the range of organic food available. In addition, members that have grown their own organic produce may barter or sell at club meetings.

The idea behind Reading's True Food Club is to help fill the gap that's been left by the closure of wholefood shops in the town, and to support local growers and wholesalers.
