Reading fair trade town initiative

Reading Fair Trade Town Initiative came about, because many people in Reading really care about the poor work conditions endured by workers in poor countries, who produce most of our food and consumer goods. Reading consumers want producers to receive a fair days pay and insure good human rights & environmental standards are adopted.

The Initiative was launched on Monday 4th March 2002 (right) with a fair trade breakfast at Reading Borough Council. The initiative is strongly supported by the Leader of Reading Borough Council Dave Sutton, former Mayor Tony Jones and Chris Thomas - the Sustainability Policy & Project Officer of RBC. They are committed to develop a fair trade and ethical buying policy for the council.
