Reading International Solidarity Centre (RISC)
Reading's development education centre

Colin Date

Trustee

I am at present the secretary of RISC. I have been with the organization since the start. In the mid-70s I spent 3 years teaching in Botswana, as I enjoyed travelling but wanted to experience a different culture. During this time away and on return, I increasingly reflected on our society in the UK - especially the materialism and the accepted values of our culture.

I made contact with the Bracknell/Ascot World Development Movement (WDM) group at a "fair" for local voluntary groups and so began my involvement with development education - although it was a subject studied at the school I taught at in Botswana! Out of this WDM group evolved World Education Berkshire (WEB) which became "mobile" with the use of a double-decker bus based in Slough. WEB then moved to London Road and became RISC!

I helped with the accounting, inland revenue returns and wages for several years. The whole organization continues to evolve and expand but it has been kept afloat through the amazing dedication of a small loyal collective and countless volunteers. I now live in Binfield and have been teaching science/chemistry in 4 schools within Berkshire for the last 20+ years.
