Fair Trade: Material Matters
Work by artist Jane Frost October 09

Above: Work made by the public in response to Jane Frosts work.
Jane Frost’s artwork work raises the profile of resources and materials used in creating work as well as the communities and the environment it is placed in, the effect it will have over time and the market it is placed in. She combines textile based skills and materials with work that highlights peoples’ interaction with the environment to encourage a sensitivity and awareness of shared living space. As a participant in the Moscow Biennale in February and March 2007 she made links with Fair Trade fortnight in the UK using the project Fair Trade: Material Matters.

"I invited people of all ages to draw a self-portrait, they kept the original and I took a carbon copy to work with, stitching onto recycled blankets.
Biennales are Art markets and are based on the same principles as the financial stock exchange. The future value of the work is invested in by dealers and marketers, the artist is usually excluded from this dealing; this denies the artist a right to the future value of their own work. The title 'Fair Trade Art' relates to an action of exchange where both sides of the transaction benefit and the action is in the present".

The work will be exhibited at risc during October 2009, linking to Reading International Festival
